SCULLING.

[ BY TELEGRAPH —PER PRESS ASSOCIATION] THE SCULLING CHAMPION. WANGANUI, Jan 7. At the-ceremony of paying ovCr the stakes last night, Dick Arnst declared that now he was retiring from the game, lie would say straight out that tlio Wanganui course was unequalled in the world. Nothing definite has yet been settled in regard to the next race, which both Hannan and Padden declare they intend to insist upon having. It is a .peculiar position. Hadfield is prepared to row whoever is entitled to the race, but that is the point in dispute. The champion intends, leaving for Nelson on Monday for a few days and then visits Auckland, returning to Wanganui to resume training at an early date.

ARNST DECLINES TO RACE , again. WANGANUI, Jan. 6. Arnst was approached this morning by supporters who offered to put up half the stake money if he would row Hadjlield again. Arnst replied that he \vas done with the game, as participant in such races. He recognised it was time for him to retire after making such an exhibition as he did yesterday, on top of the splendid form he had shown in some of his trials which proved him to be as good as ever. The only explanation of his poor showing is that he had gone dead stale. Hannan, who claims to he entitled to tlie next race with Hadfield, has already half his stake money in hand, and is hopeful of raising the balance wiithin a few days, in which case he must, according to the rules, get first chance.
