The spectacle of boy marksmen shooting shoulder to shoulder with tried and experienced veterans at the Auckland Rifle Association’s annual meeting in Penrose has been an encouraging sign for those keen sportsmen who have the raising of the standard of good marks manship at heart (says the Auckland , “Herald”). In many of the contests ambitious lads of 14 summers competed meritoriously with New Zealand champion. raarlismen and succeeded in carrying off a fair proportion of the prizes It was interesting to note that the ' youngest marksman on the range was a lad of 14 years of age; the oldest 1 was 2. I During the visit to Luke Kanieri of ! the Y.M.C.A. walking party a number iof prominent residents of Hokitika motored out and gave the visitors interesting talks on the history, resources and scenic attractions ol Westland. Dr Teichelmann, than whom there is no greater authority on mountaineering in New Zealand, expressed keen interest in the visit of such a virile walking party and threw out the suggestion that the movement should be extended by the formation of a. Climbers’ Club. Tiie proposal was enthusiastically received. It is interesting to note that Dr Teichelmann has promised to visit Christchurch at an early date, and give a lantern demonstration of Westland scenery under the auspices of tlie Canterbury Progress League. The movement to form a Climbers' Club in conjunction with Westland mountaineers will probably then, take place.
Information regarding the aeroplane accident is that when near Motunau the machine was seen by residents to he travelling slowly, but at a good height. When above a gully something apparently went wrong with tire engine, and the pilot glided down to make as good a landing as possible. It is thought that the pilot, in attempting to avoid tiris gully, lost his flying speed, artd that as a result the machine stalled, artd fell probably 30 or 40 feet. An examination of the machine after the accident showed that it had nose-dived to tire ground. The aeroplane was very badly smashed. No one actually saw the crash, for when near the ground the aeroplane was hidden from the view of those watching it by a belt of trees. The engine was examined, and had apparently developed trouble. It is thought that if the aeroplane had not lost ' 4 s flying speed, Lieutenant Grout could have carried oit past the gullv, and made a good landing—Lyttelton Times.
