OPIUM SEIZED. PALMERSTON N., Jan 5. A smart capture was made_by the

local police to-day involving the seizure of seven tins of opium. On. the arrival of the Auckland Express, the police searched the persons Mid effects of three Chinese passengers, and discovered opium; secreted in a bundle of soiled linen in a portmanteau of Wong Yin, an Auckland kundrymah travelling to Wellington. Yili itaS brought before the Court and remaitded till Monday on £2OO bail. AEROPLANE FALLS. i HAWERA. Jan. 5. An aeroplane, piloted by Captain Mercer, with Mr Salter as a passenger, arrived at the racecourse from Wanganui late this afternoon. After, replenishing the tank, a start was made for Raglan. The machine rose and sharply cleared the electric wires, hut had not enough way on. It' dropped suddenly, smashing the propeller and the undercarriage. The occupants were uninjured.
