Thoughts For The Times
The League of Nation’s Home. In beautiful, spacious grounds some five miles from file city of Genoa the League of- Nations has its permanent home. The world is still suspending its judgment as to whether that league is to be one of humanity’® greatest triumphs or ghastliest failures. The future alone can show,
Yesterday one of the inmates of the local Old Peoples’ Home attempted suicide. He cut his throat, and also inflicted body wounds with a pair of scissors. His injuries are serious, but it is not expected that they will prove fatal. An enquiry last night elicited the information that there is no danger . unless complications ensue.—Argus.
The prompt action of a lad sixteen years of age, who pluckily jumped into the water, fully dressed, saved a little girl from drowning at Gorsair Bay on Tuesday afternoon, says the Lyttelton Times. The five-year-old daughter of Mr E. R. Merrick, of Christchurch, had succeeded in walking along the planking on the outside wall of the ladies’ swimming enclosure when she suddenly lost her balance and fell into deep water. Very few bathers were about at the time but the lad Roy Newton, who is a brother of Mrs Merrick, noticed the child fall and without waiting to divest himself ot any clothing, jumped into the water and succeeded irt bringing her to safety. Had it not been for his prompt action the 'little girl would probably have been drowned. When you are ordering your ’Xmas cakes don’t forget to try Laughtons.
