Repair works oil Lake lvanicri road are now in hand. Good work was done yesterday by a party of men, who had the lorry for assistance. A considerable stretch of the road was “blinded,” as well as a portion repaired—very good progress being made. The work will be continued to-day, and two or three additional days’ work should see the road in passable condition. The elfect of the heavy traffic to resume after the holidays, however, may have a disturbing effect. What is claimed to be an Australasian record in sheep-shearing is reported to have been established at Air Moore’s shed, in the Wanganui district, by Mr W. Higgins, Waitotara, who shore 372 sheep on Decemger 23rd in eight hours twenty-five minutes. The splendid performance was carried out in the presence of a number of spectators. Air Higgins, who is a young man, used one machine and changed his own cutters. There was no picking of the sheep, | which were big ewes, and no lambs were included in the mob. The previous Australasian record was 361 for a day’s work.

The Westland Trotting Club holds its one day summer meeting on the Hokitika racecourse on Friday afternoon. , The meeting promises to be a very successful one. Every arrangement has ; been made, and the management will ; be such as to leave nothing to be de- • sired. During the forenoon yes-1 terdav lncinhcrs of the party were afforded the opportunity of inspecting the large dredge working at South' Hokitika and were much interested in . the gold-winning operations. The whole stay of the party has been a very j delightful one and the party carry . away the happiest of recollections of the visit. The only rain experienced was during the walk from Kuniara to the railway station —for the rest perfect weather was enjoyed. -The visitors extol the beauties of Lake Kauieri to the highest. They were charmed with every phase of it and will advertise its beauties throughout Canterbury. So pleased were the visitors with their sojourn in Westland, and their treatment on all sides, that the Y.M.C.A. organisation will arrange most probably for the next season’s trip to Westland, when it is expected an even larger number will attend the camp
