The friendlv invasion of the Y.M.C.A. lias caused great interest amongst many of the organisations of this town. It is going to cause greater interest on Cass Square on Monday, 2nd .January, at the Caledonian Society’s sports where the members ol" the trek will give a display of physical culture.
Mr Seddon M.l’., is travelling from Christchurch to-day, to spend a few days in the electorate before the parliamentary session resumes. Air Seddon is expected in Hokitika to-night, and returns to Greymouth on Monday. He will revisit Hokitika again during next week. Mr Seddon will he staying at Keller’s hotel.
The Victoria District High School deservedly ranks very high among the
schools of the Dominion. A few days ago we recorded the success of two ex-pupils of this school and again we observe that in the University Kxaininatiou held last month Dorothea M ild, another ex-pupil, passed for Hanking Diploma in economies and lor accountancy in Economics. No official statement has yet been made regarding the result of the appeal |,v members of the stall’ of the Napier telegraph office against the punishment imposed as the result of the leakage of the Springbok cablegram. The sports start" at 1 o’clock sharp and there is a very full programme arranged in which the" popular Highland dancing forms a prominent part. In the evening the Princess Theatre will he the scene of a good Scottish concert and the very tine programme published in this issue should result in an overflowing audience.
On Thursday at Westport, Dr Meade was married to Miss Lileen Sihhald. second daughter of Mr T. Sihhald, of Christchurch. The wedding took jilace at St John’s Church. Itev Canon Courser officiating. The bride, who was given away by her brother. Mr J- hiibbald, of Brisbane, looked charming in a dainty gown of palest blue chiffon taffeta, embroidered with crystal heads, with tulle toil over orange blossoms. The bride was at.ended bv Miss -Muriel 1 darkness as chief bridesmaid, and by a dainty group of flower girls. Miss Kileeii Meade, of Cirevmouth, niece, of the bridegroom; Miss Molly Curtis, of Westport, and two little nieces of the bride, Lilian and Hetty Hrockctt. The bridegroom was attended hv Mr .T. Knright as best man. After the ceremony, a number of friends were entertained by Mr and Mrs Hrockett at their residence in Queen Street.

The by-election held on Thursday to t ill the vacancy on the Grey County .oiinty Council for the Red Jacks Ridng. resulted in the return of Mr tl. ft. aider, who secured 58 votes to 22 se- • nml by Mr M’. H. Pnriiit. The condition of the road surface to .like Kanieri is not at all satisfactory or motor traffic at present. The late it-avy lorry traffic has badly damaged lie road, and the boles made have been Hied with largo rough stones. This reavv metal needs blinding and the mrfuce of the road generally reforminf, if the road is to be kept in order for the growing volume of tourist traffic. On Wednesday Seven Europeans who were peacefully and pleasantly engrossed in the fascinating hut illegal game of pakapoo were rudely disturbed by tho police, and as a result they will be required to attend the Greymouth Magistrate’s Court on January I.lth. The scene of the raid was an establishment in Chinatown, ami the raiding parly "-as led by Detective Young and Sergeant Fryer. Their sudden entrance caused wild excitement among the Chinese and whites on the premises, and the latter cast desperate glances around for an avenue of escape. Th" police arrangements had been well made, however, and the haul was complete. The men on the premises realised that the “game was up,” and names and addresses were quickly forthcoming. While the raid was in progress another patron of the "bank” arrived, and on reaching the door was met bv the polite query front Detective Young: “Do you want a ticket’?’ The visitor forgot his manners in his hurry, and when last seen was exceeding the speed limit.
