SHOT DEAD. INVERCARGILL, Dec. 30. Frank Bone, aged 13 years, while, out with a companion, John Hutchison. U years, who curried a pea rifle, was accidentnlly shot at Otautau last night. The bullet passed through the heart and death was instaiitiiileotiS. THE SOUTH AFRICAN TEAM. WELLINGTON. Dec. 27 Mr A. T. Davies, president of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association-, has received the following cablegram from Mr Ira G. Emery, manager of the South African amateur athletic team, which arrived at Adelaide last Friday:—“Springboks prefer to compete for medals and certificates, instead of trophies. Relays all distances; arrange plenty meetings ; men comiK-ting individually and collectively thiotlghout.’’

The ocean yacht race from Auckland to Tanranga was won by the \\ aione, with the Rc-tless second. The yachts left Auckland at 4 p.ni. ml Saturday, and the first to arrive here was the Victory, which crossed the mark at LIS p.m. on Sunday, followed by the Maione at 5.0 p.ui.< Restless at . 5.12.
