Thoughts For The Times.
' Coon Roads and Bkttkk. i The roads in Taranaki which have earned so much commendation, are of macadam, surfaced in some way. Some I me only tarred and sanded; others 'me surfaced with tarred macadam; but nuiiiion is gaining ground that bitu--1 men is superior to tar. In most cases, however, the cost of maintenance is far too high, and local bodies will, in many cases, find it impossible to maintain them in first-class order and extend them also. But, wherever a thoroughly consolidated well-formed and well-drained macadam road exists, I foci sure that it would be a wise economy to impose a bitulithie surface, like tin* famous Columbia River highway. Done scientifically, the cost of maintenance is reduced almost to vanishing point and you have a road which reduces the cost of traction by one-half.— Press Correspondent.
