WESTLAND RACING CLUB.
SUMMER MEETING
FIRST DAY’S RESULTS
The Westland Racing Club for the third year in succession had to postpone their Boxing, Day fixture owing to inclement weather. On Sunday night the rain descended in a deluge and continued well into Monday morning, over four inches of rain falling within some twelve hours. As a result it was found necessary to postpone the races foi that day, and this course was agreed upon about 9 o’clock, and the outside ; districts were promptly notified through I the Railway Department. The weaI ther cleared in the afternoon, but was ! cloudy and threatening all night and ! yesterday morning. The attoinoon I proved bright and sunny, but it clouded i over again towards the end of the day. ! The course was somewhat heavy as a ] result of the heavy rain, but the going ! was good and this was fully exemplified , ! in the hurdle race where the six con i testants gave a fine exhibition of jnmpI iiur. going the whole rounds of the race j without the slightest mistake. The • racing was interesting throughout and ! the fields good except in two instances, j In the race for the Hokitika Handicap | there were five starters and the result i was the popular win of the South West j land owned Orange Mart, which had ; a comfortable win. The Town Band j wits present during the afternoon, and I | played a pleasing programme. The various officials of the Club were all in I their, places, and the proceedings ran very smoothilv, the whole of the races j being run off right on time, the lastrace having all flic; money on several minutes before the time for closing down. There was it large attendance, almost as large as the, first day last year, while speculation was brisk, and Mr T.vneh and his capable staff handled the sum of £11.923 for the afternoon, as against £12,719 for the first day last vonir and C‘8.620 for the first day ta 1919.
