AUCKLAND, Dee. 22 The* first prosecutions instituted bv the Auckland City Council in connexion with the health precautions , campaign were before Mr Poynton, S.M., to-day. There were in all nine cases. Eight were not defended, and the defendants weie each fined, the, remaining case being partly board. The defendants included hotel licensees, street hawkers, a firm of butchers, a Chinese fruiterer, and a dining-room proprietress. The Magistrate issued a warning -that heavy penalties would be imposed for future breaches. A Chinese fruiterer, for failing to clean bis yard, was fined £1 and costs. A local firm of butchers admitted having allowed waste matter to remain on the premises for such time as it would afford shelter tor rats. A fine of Cl and costs was imposed. For having allowed refuse to be placed in unsuitable receptacles, an hotelkeeper was lined a similar amount. Street hawkers appeared for failing to protect fresh fruit from Hies and dust, and wero fined similar amounts. ATTEMPTED MULDER '. lIARGE. ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. DUNEDIN, Dec. 22 Charges against Arthur Joseph Milligan of the attempted murder of James Edward Ashley Perry and John Frederick Pcrrv were heard at Milton this morning.

James Perry, a youth of sixteen, who married accused’s sister, Gladys d 8), said there was some objection by members of the Milligan family to the marriage.
