Barlow, Labour member for Bloemfontein in the Union Parliament, contributes u striking article to the “Capo Argus," in which he says that the Press reports of the tour of the Governor-General (Prince Arthur of !'minaught) through the Orange Free •S'me failed <u (onvev the extraordinary l<..|>i;|.:rity achieved !>y the GovernorGen. ral.
The whole tour was a magnificent success. says Mr Harlow. Prince Arthur had to piomise to come again and bring the Princess with him. He visited people in their homes, and over coffee, beer, and tobacco discussed with them their every-day troubles. He captivated men and women alike, and the v. hole countryside turn. J out to greet him. Children welcomed him with sons, and the burghers saddled up and formed armed escorts for him. More than once the l’riuee, with the greybeards of the veldt around him, narrated how, after the armistice, he had inspected the great German liner lmperator, which
was intended by Germany to bring to South Africa Prince Saint Von Salm as the .irst German Governor-General of South Africa when the war was over. The Free State people, Mr Barlow dels, now realise the truth of the German menace, and their attitude towards the war has undergone a change. : *ne Free State is the main stronghold of Nationalism, hence the effect of the Prince’s tour is the more remarkable.
