[in' IKLECRAPH—PER PRESS ASSOCIATION, KICKING INTO TOUCH. THE AUCKLAND RULE. WELLINGTON, Dec. 21. The New Zealand Rugby Union’s letter stating that the English Union ; j had approved of the Auckland rule rej gai'ditig kicking into touch provisionally I but bad restricted it to Auckland, was I considered by the local union last eveit- ' ing. The rule provides that when the ball is kicked into touch within twentyfive yards of the kicker’s goal line tlie opposing side shall bring it out opposite the spot where the kicker was. Tlie discussion on the letter showed that the Wellington Union did inn favour ihc I alteration. . The chairman considered that the New Zealand Union bad gone further J than i' bad uuihovit\ to do. Other - I speakers believed liiat many unions bad changed their views. Tin chairman , suggested that steps should be taken to goi tbe rule rescinded and tic matter was deferred. , A MAYORAL ELECTION. ; WELLINGTON, Dec. 21. The contest for the Mayoralty of Lower Mutt resulted in W. T. Strand. | councillor, defeating E. P. Rishwortli, ‘ Mayor, both of whom resigned their seats to contest the election, by •’’3" vole's. The point of difference between the candidates was that the Mayor supported the erection of gasworks, which the ratepayers by poll sanctioned, and Councillor Strand and tbe Ratepayers’ Association opposed.
