The County authorities have been advised by the Public Works Department that the construction of the Little Wiutalin bridge approaches are to he put in hand at once. This work could not be undertaken till the new bridge was decked, as the cutting on the norm .approach is to supply the filling 'for the large embankment approach on the south side. It is estimated that it will take twelve weeks to complete the filling working a single shift, and the Resident Engineer is endeavouring to arrange for double shifts so as to expedite the work.
Mr Colechin representing the Y.M.C.A. of Christchurch arrived in. town yesterday for the purpose of completing arrangements for the tour of tie band of fifty young men who are touring the Coast during the next few days. The party leave Christchurch on Monday and reach Aickens that night, walking from Arthur’s Pass. Kuinara. is reached the next night, and the party comet by train from Kuniara on Wednesday morning. They arc then entertained at luncheon by the Progress League, and in the afternoon walk to Kanieri Like, where most of tjieir holiday will lie spent. The party will be under tho charge of Mr R. A. Kenner, the "tenoral secretary of the Y.M.C.A. at Christchurch. The Lyttelton “Times” reports that .seventeen rats were caught in the kitchen of a private hotel in Christchurch on Monday night. The rat colonies are found in small groups at various points in the city. Next night’s bag consisted of 45 rats, hut 20 pieces of poisoned bail were taken as well, and this re])resents fully 20 casualties. TV hat are described as the four principal rat centres of the city, .have practically been cleared. Only six have been caught in that area in the last few days. A pro- . At Addington stock sales, there was a medium entry of bacon pigs, but an over-supply of porkers. The demand for the latter at the end of the sale weakened. Values were:—Choppers •15s to 705.; light baronets, 55s to 60s; heavy haveners 65s to 705.; extra heavy bat-oners to £4 ; average price per lb. 5j to Old. Light porkers 35s to 40e. heavy porkers 45s to 545. ; average price per ll> Old to Bd. A large number of store pipes was forward and prices were very much lower all round, except for small -suckers suitable for Christinas trade. Values were:—Medium stores 20s to 255. ; small stores 12s to 20s. ; good weaners 12« to 175.; small weaners 7s to 11s.

The subsidy payable by the Government for the destruction of tho koa was increased during the year from Is to ss, and at once an increase in the number of koa beaks presented to the Department’s officers was noticeable. It. is understood Mr S. Clements is the successful tenderer for the RossWehoka mail. Mr Clements proposes carrying out the service by motor to the Waiho, and by horse from there to Weheka. It is intended also to run the mail from Hokitika so that quicker despatch will result, saving transhipment of mails at Ross. The news service is to start on January Ist and for tht* summer months will be twice weekly to Hari Hari and once weekly to Weheka. A new time-table is now being compiled and will be announced in due course. Arrangements will be made for a one day stop over at Waiho, while the mails are being taken to and from Weheka. It is proposed also to make as close a. connection as possible with the Christchurch- Wellington service, so as to have quick Dominion despatch for mails to and from the far south as well as to the distri«t served by the motor carried mails.
