The death took place of Mr James Foote Stoddart yesterday at the residence of .Mrs •). Orr, Turumalm Street, Groymouth. Deceased, who was 57 years of age, was a native of Kdinburgh Scotland.

M r Vincent If. Freeth, who has been foi some time advertising manager of the Monawatu Daily Times Cov., Ltd., Palmerston North, has resigned his position in order to join the staff of tile Charles Haines Advertising Agency, Ltd., of Wellington.

.Miss Doreen V. Daly, pupil of the Convent of Mercy, Greymouth, has received advice that she has been successful in passing the Licentiate Qualifying Examination of the Associated Board of the Royal College and Royal Academy of Music, London. Miss Daly secured 118 marks out of a possible loft, and is to he congratulated oil her meritorious success.

The Superintendent of the Greymouth Fire Brigade, Mr T. Clarke, stated at the Fire Board’s meeting last evening, that on the occasion of the recent fire at Henniker’s, in Chapel St., Greymouth, “there was not enough pressure to fill a bucket with water,” when they arrived at the scene of the fire. He said he would judge the height of the house to lie about "0 feet above the level of the town.

The death took place yesterday at Reefton of Mr James Stevenson, a pioneer of the Inangahua District, aged 83 years. He was a native of Paisley (Scotland) and arrived at Dunedin in 1803 and the West Coast 1865. •He had been a continuous resident of the Reefton District for 53 years. As a young man he followed the sea. hut later entered business at Reefton. Ho retired 12 years ago. He was a great mining speculator, and a director of many mining companies, including the ‘•Keep-it-Dark”, and the New liig River, and also of tile Electric Light Company. The late Mr Stevenson was for years the treasurer of the Reefton Jockey Club. He was a keen sport and years ago owned a racehorse. Ho leaves a widow, three daughters and three sons. The daughters are Alesdames Fenton and Mel.ean, of Auckland and Tmieliope, of Melbourne, while the sons are James, farmer, lnangahim Junction; Arthur, Post Office, Reeiton. and William, Dispatch Foundry, Greymouth.

A correspondent writes:—“.Miss l.earmoiit’s art pupils are holding their annual exhibition in Kaniori and the work, when compared with that of former exhibitions, certainly shows' no lessening either in talent or in enthusiasm. Miss Learmont’s genius as a teacher is again strikingly evidenced and her fortunate pupils are assuredly making the most of their exceptional opportunities. The general effect is, this year, greatly enhanced by subject grouping. Among many examples of merit- a few may he taken at random, nut. in the order of merit. Miss C. i Morris lias a charming study in “Hoses" and a fine sea scene showing a gathering storm : Mis- Milliter's "Azaleas” is admirable: .Miss Forsyth

A Hooky Heath,” and “The Altar”— :ui exquisite work ; Miss K. ('hesterman has eclipsed herself in her black and white studies, and Miss X. Selby is represented by "A Yacht,” and M. Hutchison by ".V Castle,” and a tray hearing whisky, cigars, etc., is so realistic that several attempts “to see life” on them have actually been made. Mr- West has a very striking picture showing a line of fishing smacks coming into harbour. Among the juniors of promise are C. Wylie, ('. Evans, 11. Yarrall, J. .Milliter, C. McCormack. .). Thorpe and I. Millner. There has been a constant stream of visitors and Miss l.earmont most considerately gave a day lor the pupils of tile schools in the neighbourhood. In the large centres are art galleries to inspire and delight, hut the I Coast is without its gallery. As an inspiration and a source of pleasure I long may Miss l.earmont and her pupils | flourish.”
