Early in tho new year—-about February—a start is to be made with tho building of the new memorial church, which is to replace the present All Saints’ Church. The first step will lie to remove the existing Sunday School, ■for which a tender is being let. Portion of the site at present occupied by the school is required for the new church building. The eoniplcted church will ho a very ornate edifice, hut it is to he erected in sections as the funds are in hand. With the money in hand and in sight it is hoped to go on with tho building of the nave, constituting the principal section of the structure. The main entrance to the new church will he from Stafford Street.

Westport Boxing Association made inquiries from Frank O’Neill, of Rulianga, regarding a match with Preston for Boxing Night, taking the place of Hannah, who, by doctor’s orders was unable to keep the engagement at Westport. O’Neill stipulated catch weights, so the Westport Association decided to look elsewhere and has now matched Pat Gleeson, an Australian boxer with a long record of of wins, against Preston. Gleeson is to meet Dwyer at Auckland on Saturday. Dwyer gained a twelve-iron nd decision over Hannah last Saturday.

There was a pitiful scene in the Auckland police court, when u very young, frail-looking woman, attired in black, faced the magistrate on a charge

of having attempted suicide. It was a sad story, listening to the telling of which the unfortunate young woman collapsed and fell heavily to the floor whilst her little child screamed in terror and her women relatives buret into weeping. She was hurriedly lifted up and removed into the open air, and the magistrate immediately declared the woman to he “convicted and discharged.” Her story was that the accused and her husband both contracted influenza. The Westland County Council has a notice to County householders to-day stating stringent measures are necessary to exterminate rats and mice. Country residents may obtain poison for rats free at the County Office. There is a special onus on householders to destroy the vermin at this period and any neglect will render offenders liable to prosecution. The precautions are taken for the prevention of plague.

At the Addington stock sales on Wednesday a largo entry of fat pigs, many of which were poorly finished, was submitted to a moderate demand. Prices were on a par with the previous week’s figures. Notwithstanding notices posted on Kanieri bridge prohibited vehicles use the crossing from time to time. A flagrant case was reported this week, when a loaded lorry was crossed, considerably straining the bridge which is now under repair.
