The Canterbury Education Board notifies recommended dates for the school holidays.

In connection with the Kimu Catholic School Concert to-night, Clements’ motor ears will leave the corner of Stafford and Sewell Streets for Rimu at 7.30 p m.

The overland service between Greymouth and Christchurch will run daily fpini Saturday. 17th. December to Tuesday. lOilt. January. There, will be a daily connection with the Hokitika line‘from Monday 19th. December to Tuesday 10th. January. Mr G. A. Wood who purchased the s.s. John Anderson at Lyttelton last week, returned to Christchurch yesterday to arrange for tho running of the Steamer in the Bays trade about the Akaroa Peninsula. Mr Wood says the steamer "ill be available for the south trade here if the- settlers go on with their projected dairying proposals at Okunfand indicate the volume of trade they will offer. The little steamer is said to bo specially suited for the South jtrade. and will carry up to 24 head of fat cattle. With the opening of the railway to Canterbury, a stock trade from the south.for the Addington market should be opened up.

The appointment of the medical superintendent to the Grey River Hospital was discussed at a meeting of the lloaiil bold yesterday. There were six applications read from various parts of the Dominion. After careful consideration the Board decided to appoint Dr Lovell Gregg, M. 8., C’b„ IT, N.Z., of 'Coromandel Hospital, Auckland District. Dr Gregg, who is 48 years of age, is a married man and served for two years as bouse surgeon at the Dunedin Hospital and a period as honorary surgeon at the Clyde and Invercargill hospitals. He underwent a course of study at the West London Rost Graduated College and gained a considerable amount of X-ray experience at the Belfast hospital. Dr Gregg stated that he would lie able to commence duties here in January.

Pupils of the secondary school under Mr J. Niven, attended the afternoon sitting of the Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon as a class. During the course of their stay there was something in variety to hold their attention, especially during the cross-ex-amination of witnesses in the charge of nest robbing of native birds. There was a large attendance at St Mary’s Club room last evening. A special feature was the game of fortyfives which engaged sonic twenty-four players. After spirited competition Mr K. McGregor was awarded the prize donated by Mr F. Thompson. Mr McGregor kindly donated the prize towards the children's competitions audit was auctioned in the room, and realised u good sum. The winners of the euchre tournament were Miss Bell and Mrs J. Cameron, and Messrs Reardon anil W. higgling. -Mr Reardon kindly donated bis prize to the management. The prizes were given by the A. and A. Stores. Slipper was then served and the evening concluded with a nance. The music was supplied by Misses A. Daly and M. Gicse. Mr E. Breeze acted as M.C. On Monday evening the Club concludes its season, when the aggregate points won during the season will lie announced and prizes presented.
