Reindeer Meat Industry
S-VN FRANCISCO, Nov. 8. A party of New York financiers and business men. beaded by Robert Leo Dunn, have just completed an 800,000 dollars deal bv which it, bought from .lafet Lindelierg, of San Francisco, his Alaska herd of 11.000 reindeer at 37 dollars per head. In addition to purrhasing this vast herd of reindeer, a big option was also paid d(‘wn for the second Lindelierg herd. This is the first step to market reindeer meat on a large scale in the retail markets of the United States and also the first arrangement to market .throughout the world the by-products of the animal obtained from its hides hoofs and hones. The value of the byproducts will, it is said, exceed the revenrv from the meat of the carcases. The new purchasers have in view refrigeration plants so as to be able to delivei the reindeer meat, in good condition in competition with the methods ~f the Chicago meat packers, hut, incidentally, the new industry is not expected to have ally material effect upon the New Zealand and Australian importations of refrigerated meat to the. United States, that trade having already been firmly established with the American public, who eagerly buy up |lie Antipodean imporbod meats. In regard to tbii San Francisco undertaking, the New Yorkers arc endeavouring to enlist th(> services of AD Lindelierg as the active expert of their concern as well as a Mromincnt director and part owner in their ~ompntiy. The deal means the fruition of Mr I imleherg’s dream to market reindeer meat in the United States, the same l having recently been attempted in
Canada with promise of much success.
