From Hon, D H. Guthrie. Acting Minister of Railways: Sir.- With reference to your representations respecting storage facilities for t-iinlier at Hokitika, r have the honour to inform you that as intimated by the General Manager during the discussion with Messrs AVard and Evans of the Westland County Council, there is grant difficulty in connection with the improvement of Hokitika station accommodation on the existing site owing to the crossings at Weld and Stafford Streets. The Department is desirous of rearranging the station yard | so as to provide for the requirements of the present and prospective traffic for tlii* district wlicii the West Coast line is opened through to Canterbury. In do this satisfactorily it will be necessary to dose Station! Street altogether. providing for pedestrian traffic only by all overbridge, vehicular traffic being confined to Weld Street and Hampden Street which could hi* widened to one chain. The alternative would la- the removal of the station to another site on the Greymonth side towards Sea View. It was understood that in view of the benefits to the town and district the Local Rodics might he favourably disposed to the closing of Stafford Street and so retaining the station on the i present site and enabling the require- : nil-ills of sawniillers to be provided for ; by private sidings on Gibson’s Quay, j The Railway Officers have been in- , strutted to interview both the County , Council and the Borough Council on j the matter and I shall be glad if you will also geL into communication with . those interested with a view to tin matter being understood by them and a satisfactory settlement arrived at -is early as possible.
