The death took place in the Hospital, AVestport on Saturday morning of Mrs Mary Elaniiagan. wife of Mr AW, Flannagan, of Peel Street, Westjxirt. Deceased,| who was aged 47, leaves a sorrowing husband, three daughters and three sons to mourn their loss.
The funeral of the late Mr John Hopcre Wharcwiti I'm, the member of Parliament representing the Southern Maori constituency, was the occasion of a large gathering at Tuahiwi on Sunday. Many hundreds of Maoris and pnkehaH saw laid to rest the mortal remains of the descendant of Tiiahuriri, the famous chief of the N’tu Ahuriri tribe.
Mr P. Du Meyer, a member of the Springbok football team, who remained in New Zealand after the departure of his South African comrades, left Auckland last week, on route fur Capetown. It is stated as practically certain that Mi du Meyer will return to make his homo in New Zealand. Two other members of tile Springbok team, including one of the Miohau family are stated to he contemplating settling in the Dominion.

The death took place at Wellington on Saturday of Mrs C. P. Morris. The deceased lady had not ciiiovcd good health for some time past, hut her demise was sudden. For sninc years in the seventies the late Mrs Morris (then Miss Dimmit) resided with her parents at Ross anil Hokitika, where her father carried on a photographic business. For maiiv years deceased hold important Government positions in Wellington, and iusl previous to her marriage was private secretary to Sir Thomas Mackenzie. She was 60 years of age, and is survived by her husband and two sisters. The late Mrs Cohen of Rooftop was also a sister.

The u'-vkly bulletin of infectious disease cases issued by the Public Health Department at noon on Monday was as follows Inangalnia : Diphtheria 1; Grey: Diphtheria 2, enteric 1, varioella 1 -, North Canterbury : Scarlet fever 3, diphtheria 3. tuberculosis 11. pneumonia 4. pneumonic influenza 2, erysipelas 1. varicella 3; South Canter-bury-Scarlet fever 5; other districts, nil.' Total cases 37. There were nine deaths from infectious diseases during the past week, seven being from tuberculosis, one from diphtheria, and oim from pneumonia.
If the House accepts an economy suggestion by Mr Hudson (Motiiekn). it will hardi.v be said to he disinterested. Air Hudson asked the Prime Alinister whether in the opinion of the Government it is in the best interests of the Dominion that parliamentary elections should he held every three years, and whether the large expenditure so incurred is justifiable at such frequent intervals at a time when national economy is so essential.' The “Press” says—A number of people who received telegrams on Monday were surprised to find that, instead of the messages being hand written, they were typed on paper ribbons, which were affixed to the usual forms. In quite a number of eases confusion was caused to the receivers through their not having seen such a form before .and some people appeared to he dubious of accepting the messages as genuine. The new system which was used in Christchurch lor the first time with the public is what is known throughout the world as the multiplex ty|iewriter printing telegraph system, hut as certain improvements have recently been effected to it before its installation in the Dominion, it is known hero as the Baudot system, and it incorporates movements which were the invention of Air Donald Alurray. a native of New Zealand
An uninteresting civil case partially heard at the Supreme Court. Christchurch on Monday was occasionally lightened by Hashes of repartee, or enlivened hv a breeze. Air 0. T. J. Alpers who was appearing for a defendant company, employed the use of a blackboard and his knowledge of mathematics. The arithmetic lesson did not proceed smoothly. “Is that right ?’’ asked Mr Alpers. after doing some multiplication. subtraction, and addition. The witness could not say, and others looked puzzled. Air Donnelly, counsel for plaintiff, said lie would not differ from his learned friend in art or literature, but his mathematics were doubtful. The witness continued to lie nonplussed in answering the “sums”, and Air Alpers hotly pressed his crossevamination. when Air Donnelly interposed that he objected to counsel "coming at witness like a howling sou’wester." He appealed to his Honour. Air Justice Adams said: “It is not such a matter of temperature us temperament.
