was admitted to tlie hospital in a serious condition suffering from a wound in the throat, believed to he self-in-flicted. He is married, and has six children. His wife at present is in Wellington.
FREEZING award. WELLINGTON, Decemlier 1. Following on the Arbitration Court’s award, there has been an increase in the activities at the freezing works at Ngahauranga and Petone, but it will probably be a week or so before the killing season can he said to be in full swing. Private advices are to the effect that the Hawke’s Bay works have commenced operation. A message from Gisborne states that two locally-owned works have commenced killing. Mr F. Niall, secretary of the Freezing Works’ Federation, lias been advised" that the award lias already been amended by the Court, which has non ruled that the overtime clause shall not apply to pieceworkers other than slaughtermen or pullers. It is regarded as remarkable by the Federation that the Court should make alterations to the terms of the award which has hedn filed only four days.
SPRINGSTOX AFFRAY. CHRISTCHURCH, December 2. In connection with the recent Springston shooting affray, arising from which John Scott Main was tried and acquitted of manslaughter to-day the licensee of the Springston Hotel was fined LlO and costs for permitting drunkenness, and £.3 with costs, for exposing liquor for sale. A barman was fined for supply liquor after hours and the others, eight in all, present at the time of the affray were fined for living on licensed premises after hours.
ESCAPED PRISONERS. CHRISTCHURCH. December 2. At the Supreme Court to-day, William Herbert Chapman, who about 2 months ago escaped from custody near Ashburton while being conveyed from Dunedin to Christchurch, to serve a sentence of three months’ imprisonment cumulative to the sentence he is
now serving. In connection with this ease, Cecil and William Guthrie, farmers, were charged with having aided Chapman by giving him food and shelter. Each was fined £25 in default one month’s imprisonment. The Crown prosecutor said the offence was serious, but the act was unpremeditated. ALLEGED LIBHL. WELLINGTON, Dec. 3 A summons lias been issued against John Glover as editor of the “Maorihuul Worker” on the ground of an alleged blasphemous libel that appeared in that paper on October 12th. The hearing of the charge was adjourned to December 7th.
