Washington Conference.

\U ST KALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. CONFERENCE RUMOURS. WASHINGTON, Nov. 28 Regarding the rumours that little progress is being made, a high authority states the British, American and .Japanese delegations are most optimistic as to the results and are most satisfied with the progress. Japanese quarters definitely predict a settlement of all major problems of disarmament for the East before Xmas. The report of the Armament Committee will probably be presented to the Conference at next week’s plenary ses-

Th British delegation has not received any advice from London regarding Lloyd George’s visit. Although French circles accept Mr Harding’s proposals in principle, it is not likely they will agree to meet Germany at the Council table, unless the latter gives a definite undertaking for for payment of reparations, or arranges for some guarantee. It was indicated to-day in both Japanese and Chinese circles that the Shantung question will he settled outside the Conference.

FRIENDS OF FREEDOM. WASHINGTON, November 29. The Friends of Irish Freedom, a pro-Sinn Fein organisation in America, have c ome into the open at Washington. They have issued a circular opposing the Disarmament Conference, because therby the United States is playing into the hands of Britain. The circular is largely devoted to hostile rqfTnences to the proceedings at the conference.

Another active propaganda organisation at Washington is the Friends of ladia Council. They are pleading the cause of the Indian Nationalist Non-co-operatives, but it is interesting to note many of the names on the Directorate. One such is Air Frank I . Walsh, who is prominent in the Rinri Fein’s Council in 'America. •
