Delegates from all over the Dominion, representative of the engravers’ ;hh! die sinkers’ trade, met yesterday, at the headquarters of the Wellington Employers’ Association. It was the unanimous opinion that tlb? prevailing conditions called for unanimity amongst employers, resulting in the formation of a New Zealand Master Engravers’ and Dio sinkers’ Federation. The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year: —President, Mr W. R. Book; vice-presidents, Messrs H. Mayor and J. A. Yonng; executive, Messrs A. S. Williams, H. E. Mollcr, G. S. Remington, H. Baker, and K. Tucker; secretary and treasurer, Mr K. Ross.
THE DIAMOND MARKET. WELLINGTON, November 24
Leading jewellers clajm thjat the South African cabled information regarding thp condition of the diamond nialike! is misleading. The diamond market in Europe at the present time is stagnant owing to the economic conditions, but to state that there lias been a collapse is contrary to fact. There lias been no recent appreciable drop in tile price of diamonds in spite of the fact that the demand has fallen off. Re Beers are retrenching to prevent the output exceeding the demand. The value of diamonds in the market hold by private people will be upheld, thus preventing a financial crisis. The trade and public can. they maintain, retain confidence, in the gem position. Tho output of diamonds is so regelated that the supply and demand always fairly balance.
ELECTRIC LIGHT FOR NELSON NELSON, November 24.
A further stage in the matter of an electric stenm plant for Nelson has been reached. A special meeting of the City Council considered a report submitted by Messrs Toogood, Jones and Holmes. The selicm 0 is designed for a population of 10.000 and latest statistics give the population at 8774. It is estimated that the total number ( ,f consumers may eventually reach 1500, but the figures are based on a tota] of 1030. The maximum demand is set down at 356 kilowatts. Tt is proposed to instal two 2.50 k.w. sets which will give an ample margin. Tt is estimated that th P scheme will pay its way in the third year if business is properly organised and canvassed for. Figures are not given for th,, first year. In the second year the revenue is estimated at CB- - and the expenditure at £10.735 ; in the third %ear £14,420 and £12.7/4 re-
spectively. To obtain this revenue light would be sold at 10d per unit The cost of the scheme is s#t down af £(•,6,000 with a contingency allowance (J £IO.OOO. making a loan proposal of £70,000. Tlie Mayor said the scheme seemed an excellent one. He was in favour of putting tho loan befor 0 the ratepayers and the only tiling that struck him was whether the scheme was too expensive for the city. Councillors said there was no doubt that th 0 ratepayers would sanction tho scheme. A motion that steps he taken to place the scheme before the ratepayers was carried and it "’as resolved that the Mayor and Crs. Edwards and Harley should proceed to Wellington as soon as possible in order to get the Governor General’s consent to raise the loan and 111,. Minister’s consent to the rate of interest.
NEW YEAR’S HOLIDAYS WELLINGTON, Nov. 27
Tlie Prime Minister lias already stated that, to prevent people from losing their usual Christmas holidays, Tuesday. December 27 will he declared a public holiday, hut there has been doubt in some quarters as to whether the same thing will apply to the New Year’s holidays. When the matter was placed before an authority, he said the position was met fullv by the existing law. New Year’s Day which falls oil Sunday, will he. Mondayised, and Tuesday January 3rd. will also he a holiday.
