WAIHO BRIDGE.

Mr T. E. Y. Seddon, M.P., has received tlie following reply from Hon H. Coates, iliuister of Public Works: “Referring to the interview which the Chairman and Members of tlie Westland County Council and yourself ha I with me in September relative to Waiho Bridge Construction proposals: I have to state that I have now gone into the matter as promised. There is a vote of £SIKH) on tho estimates for the erection of a bridge, blit this amount will not be nearly sufficient to build the bridge, tbe river being one of a peculiarly difficult character owing to its glacial origin and will therefore probably require a suspension bridge •with a iong span ns well as various approach spans. In view of this and the small amount of traffic south of Wailio, I am of opinion. having regard to the present condition of financial stringency and tlie fact that I am compelled in. many cases to bold up the expenditure of votes provided for works giving access to large communities of settlers, that tbe Hovcrtimcnt would not lie justified in proceeding with tin* bridging of the Wailm River.

With regard to the Council's oiler ol C2‘!' lf) this is limited by a proviso that the work be undertaken within n period nl six months and has other stipulations which would probably have the effect ol nullifying it."
