Arbuckle's attorneys declared that they will establish bv medical testimony that Miss Kappo died from natural causes, due to weakened internal (omlitiun. They will impeach the testimony of the principal Stale witnesses and attack the motiics of the prosecution. The Stale will call Mrs Dehnont. who swore the original lnnrdPr charge. Dr Strange, who performed the antopky. Misses Brecon and Blake, who participated in the party, and a chambermaid in. the hotel who heard screams. ARRI-CK LE'S TRIAL. NEW YORK. Nov. 18 The Arlmekle trial opened at Sail Francisco. The prosecution’s opening statement reviewed the events at the hotel party, at which Miss Rappe mot her datli, declaring that it was proposed to show that accused not only assaulted Miss Rappe, hut tortured her indeserihnhly. The Judge announced the jury were to he locked up throughout the ease. Arhuckle said: “1 am satisfied with the jury, and am glad there are women on it. I want to he vindicated by women as well as hy men.”
