At the Magistrate’s Court. Cyril M. Edgecombe, who foi ill roe years was a clerk employed by the Mataknhe Road p.rnrd, pleaded guilty to the theft of £ 10.1 of the Hoard’s money paid ill rates, i!<■ was committed for sentence. bail iu LlOf 1 being allowed.

The Supreme Court opened this morning, their Honours Justices Herdman and Stringer presiding in two chambers 5 . Mr Justice Stringer, in his charge to the Grand Jury, said til® list was an exceptionally long one, there being no fewer than 31 charges. The preponderance of crimes alleged were dishonesty, hut there was a substantial number ol sexual oflcuees. His Honour commented on tin* fact that in the case of a theft of money from the Whangnrei l’nrongli C’onmil. that body had accepted restitution, ami the accused subsequently went to Thames, and it was alleged that certain money of a patriotic society had been misappropriated by him. Charges were then laid in respect ol these funds also in respect- to the theft from the Council. It seemed, to 1 1 is Honour, remarkable that a public body should have accepted restitution nnd a,Honor] a man to resign ami seek etn--1 lovment elsewhere, as though his character were irreproachable.

The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand opened to-night, and was constituted with 147 ministers and 123 elders. Rev S. TV. Currie, retiring .Moderator, presided, and Rev. D. The parlies were retiiining home in a gig from the Rangiora lines, and, through the alleged negligent driving of Hanna, a collision, took place with a motor cycle. Minnie received injuries when the gig capsized, from which lie died. EMPLOYERS FINED. GISBORNE, Nov. 15. At the Magistrate’s Court Givanui Xita and Genimra Mat sieano. tearoom proprietors, were charged with making wilful and false entries in the wages book. The Labour Inspector, Mr Whiting, said the defendants informed -ix waitresses that unless all agreed to accept 32s (id. two would have to lie discharged. After 32s (id had been accepted, defendants continued to enter 37s iiil in the wages hook. Defendants pleaded guilty. The Counsel said their business was lulling olf, and if hands were dismissed it meant unemployment. Magistrate Barton refused to accept the plea.
