Archbishop Kelly has issued a pastoral letter strongly condemnatory of some women’s modes of dressing. The letter says inter alia that ‘‘The Devil’s snare is found to be set surely and fatally in allurements of attire.” He declares that the chief obstacle to reform is worldliness and adds: is indefensible and therefore seeks to hide itself in fashion. When fashion obtains sway over general usage, it disregards the requirements of modesty and religion. Such is the condition to which we have degenerated in our day.” The letter exhorts the laitv and clergy to do their utmost to sectiie reform, and to keep fashion within the limits of Christian decorum.
