HISTORIC HOKITIKA.

A FRBENDLY RECEPTION

Tlio pamphlet pulilished in regard to Hokitika and its st-ivot nomenclature is having a friendly receotion and is meeting with a ready sale. Several newspapers comment very cordially on the publication. The dtey Uiver A««_riis remarked :- We nek now leiljiv rec*ei;>L of :t very interesting little pamphlet entitled. “Hokitika the Birth of the Borough and Street Nomenclature," being a reprint of a paper which was written hy Air D. J.- Evans, with supplementary notes by Mr S. .Saunders, of AA'ellington. Such a publication, giving within a couple of dozen pages a. fairly comprehensive narrative of Hokitika s ear-. Iv municipal history, is an asset for the Coast. It iw a useful thing for citizens to possess such a compilation, because it is only too often the case that, people know less about the origin and development of their own town and district than they do about distant cities mid other countries. Mr Evans has exceptional qualifications for writing and compiling n historical sketch tV his native town and a perusal of the booklet, which 's illustrated with several photographic views r haracterisi i, of earlier days, reveals a fund of most interesting information indeed. Mr AA’m. Evans, of Timnni. contributes liis reminiscences of the ‘sixties in Hokitika. while Sir Julius von llaast’s impressions of Hokitika in 1805 are also included. The booklet, the. proceeds from whose sale go to maintain the West laud Pioneers’ Memorial should meet with a very ready demand among Coasters generally. The “Guardian' Office (Hokitika) and Hokitika booksellers are disposing of copies. Mi Seddnii M.F., and Mr 11. M. Coul.sun. De| uty Mays'll-. also write very eoidiaily in icseeet to the iuterest'nfj; publication.
