The grand plain and fancy dress ball at Albert Hall, Ruatnpu, takes place to-morrow (Friday) evening. Capital arrangements have been made tor the function which promises to he largely attended and very successful. Robinson's lorry leaves the Town Clock tomorrow evening carrying intending patrons of the ball.* The Hokitika Boxing Association has been advised by Mr W. Pritchard that lie had interviewed Brian McClearv, tin' Australasian heavy-weight champion, in reference to a. challenge issued to him by the Association on behalf of Mr Staffan, to box in Hokitika. In connection with the Baby Show on Monday afternoon, there are promises of a very fine entry of babies from all round the district, so that the interest in the gathering should he well assured, and keen competition assured. The musical programme to be given (Turing the.afternoon will include items by several visitors from Greymonth. A stall well laden with useful articles, mainly of baby wear will be an attraction, and there will be afternoon tea. fruit salad and ice ci eams. In the evening a grand euchre tournament will be held, with dance to follow.
Another large gathering assembled at St Mary’s Club rooms last evening to take part in the euchre tournament and dance. There was keen competition for the valuable prizes offered. The first ladies’ prize was won by Mrs 1). Hunter and the second by Miss Kortegast. The successful gents were Messrs Calkin and Faulkner. A meeting to revive the Hokitika Swimming Club was held at the ( ountv Chambers at 7 o’clock last night, Mt D. J. Evans being in the chair. There was a representative attendance, including members ot the teaching stall of the school, school committee, Borough Council, and public. The Chairman explained the action leading up to the meeting, and read a letter from the Borough Council offering LoO to repair the baths, anil granting a live years’ lease of same at a nominal rental.
