The steamer Mararoa, which sailed at 7.50 o'clock to-night for Lyttelton, despatched a wireless message «xt 8.-425 p.m., stating that slid had had a breakdown in tho machinery and was unable to steam. 'Hie tug TerawiiiM loft at 10.15 p.m. to tow the Mararoa hack. The tug arrived alongside her at 11.10 p.m. It is anticipated that no difficulty will lie experienced. The, sea is smooth, with a light wind off shore. There is a drizzling rain. The tug Pelican left at 11.10 p.m. to assist ill the tow.
There tiro about 130 passengers aboard the .Mararoa. The vessH was outside the heads when the mishap happened. It was too deep for her to anchor.
No alarm was felt nboard. Repairs are expected to lie effected in time for the vessel to sail oil Thursday. Tim Prime Minister made a statement in the House as to an absence of danger, and that a safe tow into port was assured.
