[by TELEGItAI-lI—PER PRESS ASSOCIATIOts] -MATERNITY COMMISSION'S RETORT. WELLINGTON, Oet. 9 The Board of Health appointed a commission to consider the question of maternal mortality in New /.calami. This Commission in its report states that during the Inst quinquennial period the average animal maternal mortality has been 157 deaths, of which 07 were due to sepsis. Factors which load to sepsis- in this country arc put down under three main heads, ( first) abnormal virulence of organisms and diminished resistance of individuals due possibly to conditions during and subsequent to the war period, lack of domestic help and the fact (if housing difficulties may well lie factors contributing to diminished resistance. It is also shown that there has been an abnormally f high deathrate due to septic conditions following on attempts to procure abortion ; (2) unsuitable surroundings such as some private houses. Moreover some private maternity hospitals are not free from conditions which lead to septicaemia and allied troubles; (3) unduly large use of instruments and other operative measures at confinements, the use of which is urged by patients and their friends. A reduction in instrumental delivery is urgently necessary.
