The chief business of this week will be the Prime Minister’s state ment regarding his work in London. AUCKLAND EAST BVE-ELECTTON. Air Massey has stated that he will move for the issue of the writ in Auckland East by-election to-morrow. The reports froiii Auckland indicate that an interesting contest is going to take place.

„ THE CANDIDATES. Tile Government candidate will he Mr Cluthn Mackenzie, who polled heavily at the general election, when he opposed 4he late member, Arthur Myers. Mr Mackenzie lost his sight on Gallipoli, hut lie has not allowed this disability to interfere with his interest hi political matters. The Liberal Party is represented in the contest by Mr G. W. Russell, Avellknown as a. Liberal Minister in the National Government, before he lost Avon sent to labor at the last general election.

The Ijtbor cnn.dida.te will* bo either T. Bloodworth, prominent in Official Labor circles, or T.ee, who is a member of the Labor representation Committee, and also of the executive of the Returned Soldiers’ Association in Auck_ land. Lee lost an arm in the war and holds the D.S.O. It has been stated that the National Progressive. and Afoderate Labour party will also have a candidate in the field, but there is no official announcement yet. Air Stathnm, leader of the New Party has gone to Auckland.
