At Friday's meeting of the Canterbury Education Hoard Mr A. Peverill referred members to a clipping from an English newspaper containing certain remarks made by an English school teacher (Miss Moorland) on her return from a tour in New Zealand. In the course of these remarks Miss Moorland declared that New Zealand's educational system was out of date. Mr l’everill considered that the hoard should bring these remarks uhder the not ice of the Minister of Education. The other m«mb<Ts of the Board, however, thought it was not a matter for the hoard to take up. Mr AV. A. Banks said there was no doubt that New Zealand was thirty or forty years behind the times ns far as education was concerned. No action was (token in the matter.
On last Friday night, the Mental Hospital Social Committee had the honour of receiving Mrs Stavoloy and her merry entertainers, when they visited .the institution for the laudable purpose of placing a meritorious musical revue before the patients. The stage, although stripped to tile walls, was rather small for the troupe, and cramped the movements in the action songs, but the iierformers, notwithstanding, excelled their best previous efforts. The programme consisted of Part 1 of the Greynumth programme, and also four items from Part 11. Ti e Chairman in returning thanks, made pleasing reference to the spontaneity of Mrs Staveley’s second visit to Seaview. That superlative act of charity was a fitting close to work conceived in tho spirit of social philanthropy. Because of it, .Mrs Staveley hen.elorth would he known, not anly as a great artiste, but also as the '‘Queen ol Kindly Hearts.” After tlie entertainment-,' the Nurses’ SUb-C Xminiit tee :itteiidcd tlie visitors at a dainty simper. FTe could pay his fine and think no more about his misdeeds. There wa.s growing up in New Zealand a paralysis of conscience which was more than a paralysis ot the body or the will, and it was damnation in itself. Sin was not spoken of to-day. A good deal of dishonesty ami trouble was in the public mind; there was no sense of sin about it.
