The Hokitika Guardian TUESDAY, OCT. llth, 1921. ADVETISE THE DISTRICT.
Now thill we ii.ro appimuching tile eve of the occasion. of the opening of the Midland railway, Westland would do well to take lime !>y the forelock, and |,egin ;tn advertising campaign. 'I here is a. tide -which taken ill tlie Hood leads on to fortune. Flood tide is (lowing now, and the time is most opportune for an advertising campaign throughout New Zealand to let our fellowmen know wlie-re wo are, what we are. and what we have too offer. In the thought fr, r the times U-dtny there i» the idea that w'e should advertise more. We have suffered far too long through the lack of publicity ns to what we are. [ [era are the everlasting green fields—unassailed by droughts. Folk are apt' to disparage Lhe climate which prevails, because an abnormal rainfall vs recorded. Hut they fidget or do not know of the genial climate nil the year round it is never too hot, never too cold. Violent winds are not owr experience, We have brilliant sunshine
eipial arid superior to the tour cities of the - Dominion. We havu cheap land iiotahle for its pasturage qualities, and someday we shall rival Taranaki as a dairy produce country. We have, great scenic attractions, wonderful possibilities in mineral developments, and a range of forest country which will supply the needs of New Zealand indefinitely. Why hide these assets:- Why tint proclaim them, if not to all the world, at least to our own New Zealand? This is n matter in which the people must help the'msclve’s. The Government, despite the range of Crown Lands here, moves too slowly in such limiters. In fact Westland seems to he a sort of ugly duckling with the powers that he and nve are even complaining of official neglect in all matters pertaining to publicity and a recognition of our inherent resources. All over tho world, the towns, districts or countries, which realise, the value of advertising, profit greatly by it. AA'o want to get the advertising microbe into our system. and display a little puslifulness. There ri-ro waste places in A\ estland which need peopling. There is room for the creation of industries. Hydroelectric power in great volume may ho developed up and down this Coast, and such a power would be tlie lever to industrial expansion. I ell tlie outside world of these great assets. Proclaim our physical features I rout the house-tops, and hv calling attention to the latest wealth of the (listriel, results are sure to follow. Advertise wisely and well, and the task will he akin to easting the bread upon the waters. The enterprise of the people will he rewarded many fold. Them is no time like the present, which is taking on quite a roseate hue as regards the immediate future of Hokitika and district. This is an a veil no for operations along which the Progress League might work with advantage. The railway is coming soon ; a great mining venture at our very doors is proving a, splendid success; the pastoral possibilties of the district are assured; South AVestland is being tapped l>v improved roads and bridges, leading to the finest scenic country in tho world. These are all great advantages to ho extolled, and the genuine worth of the district with its past traditions, its present prosperity. and its future greatness all warrant the earnest interest of its citizens in advertising and still more advertising of its great natural resources and more remarkable future as those assets are fully exploited.
