The Central News Agency states: —• “ it is expected that the conference between the Government and Sinn Fein, il it proceeds favourably, will last several months, and that legislation for a settlement camtot he expected until February at the earliest.” DE VALERA’S ACTION. LONDON, Oct. 1. Dublin and Cork newspapers are unanimously relieved at Be Valera’s acceptance of Lloyd George’s proposal. Tht Central News Agency States:— *• In Dublin the outlook is regarded as the brightest since the rebellion in 191 ti. The reply has restored the ut- x most confidence.” A DANGER TO PEACE. LONDON, Oct. 1. The “ Freeman’s Journal,” in welcoming Do Valera’s acceptance, hopes a pence atmosphere will be carefully maintained. It says: —“The existence of the British internment camps in Ireland involves the risks of jarring incidents, thus imperilling a peace. There are untried prisoners who are in them, and they are not receiving treatment suitable to untried men. Some of the camps are insanitary, and have as commandants men as unfitted to the appointments as were those in the German prison camps in which the British were insulted and maltreated.” THE RESPONSIBILITY. Dawson Bates, Home Secretary of [lister Government speaking in Belfast declared the officials of Dublin Castle w'dro alone responsible for the awful scenes recently enacted in Belfast. They had .fettdred the poTide and,military authorities owing to the truce. Personally lie had no power to deal with the situation until the police and military services were transferred to Ulster Government.
