CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 2S A meeting-of the North Canterbury Executive upllic Formers’ Union decided that in view of the fact that a large number of farmers have made no profit during the year, and are unable to pay their land tax. they would ask the Government to lake into consideration a postponement ol payments to some future date, with the interest in the meantime to he at current rates. It was suggested that the Government. should issue Treasury bonds for the amount involved, and make the issue legal tender. It also was resolved that in view of financial dilHciilties ahead, the Executive suggests to the Legislature to tsl, into consideration (a) ail increase ol Customs duties on all articles and goods in the nature of luxuries; (b) an increase in the tax on amusements and the tax on the totalisaior : and (e) an amendment of the .Monopoly Prevention Act. ARBITRATION COURT. WEHUNTCON, Sept. 28 At the County Council's Conference ;i motion favouring the exemption ol county councils from the operation ol the Arbitration Court awards was carried, after a protest had been made against the interference and the restriction of local hollies' activities Jiy the Court. Sept. 20 A married woman, Ellen Louise Stewart, wife of Dick Stewart, residing at llaiitapu, committed suicide this morning by cutting her throat with •' razor.
