An event ii!' more tliiin passing local interest lakes pilin' nt Christchurch today. vvlioii Mr (!. A. Terry, O.H.K Mayor »l' llukilikn, is to lie married to Miss I .ay-cock, ex-Mistress of Viclorin High School. Until arc so well anil favorably known licit-, that tin* good wishes to he extended on this happy nuptial event, will lie very widespread throughout the district. Mr Terry is a very well-known figure in both town borough great service for so lone oe- , cupying the position ot Mayor. Mr Perry was civic head all through the war "period, and he was a sane and sensible exponent of public opinion throughout the varying stages of the war. and the calls made upon the eommiiiiit v. As t lit* beast ol the I atiiotii and other committees, Mr Perry has served freely and given generously. and is entitled to the citizens’ best thanks for his unflagging interest in public affairs. There has not been as far as we can recall, any public, acknowledgement of those willing services. Air Perry came forward anil his work was availed of. Perhaps the present would he an opportune time to say ‘thank you” in a public way. No doubt his fellow councillors will he disposed to honor Mr and Mrs Perry when they return to Hokitika after a month’s trip away*. If would he hut fitting il that occasion were turned into a public function whereat the citizens trenerallv tepid hi; invited, and in a eopibinei)
way tender thanks to the Mayor for ~11 that ho has done for the town and its people, both in regard to civic affairs, and also in the wider sphere of service entailed by the way and its aftermath. Meantime we take pleasure in joining with the rest of the community in extending to Mr and Mrs Perrv all the pleasing good wishes it is possible to oiler on such an auspicious occasion as that transpiring today. A special article in yesterday’s issue called attention to the work going on ;,t the Westland Hospital, whereby the popular puldie institution is being brought more and more up-to-date. The introduction of modern machinery . for domestic necessities is titnelv. The old methods are now unite obsolete for an institution of the local pretentions, ami the change over will be of great value in many ways. 'I lie initial cost of installation is large, that however, ; s inevitable where machinery is involved. lint economies should come with use. while the saving of material should he great, ami above all there is now the assurance of greater cleanliness through the articles of clothing and use passing through such high temperatures of water and steam which should ensure absolute sterilisation. This work costly as it is will for the present he an extra burden on the contributing bodies, and there is mi doubt where the money is not provided out. of sjKM-ial funds, it should lie trended as capital expenditure 1 the
change sordid over a period of years. It will be the Intiirc and not the immediate present which will derive the financial benefit from tho present very considerable outlay. Tin- suggestion to go on with the new building scheme at once seems to be imperative, and if the institution is to maintain its former goo. 1 name. The old building to be replaced by a modern cdifU-e lias long passed its period of usefulness. It is rather a menace now. and gives the institution as a whole, a very sombre appearance. It is high time it was supplanted. and in that connection it is of the highest importance to see the drainage system of llie hospital completely reformed. How the authorities
permit the present conditions to continue is beyond comprehension, and the matter calls for prompt attention. The Board should give the matter the earliest possible attention.
