HIGH COMMISSIONER’S RETORT. The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated August 27th, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London. MEAT. The mutton market is weaker owing to the considerable quantity of South American sheep available, l'or lamb there is less demand and prices arc weaker, partly owing to more being available and to discharge this week having improved, and also to lamb sc.ld at lower e.i.f. price. Some holders are selling under market price. There is a little better tone in the market for New Zealand beef. Quotations arc: New Zealand mutton, light-weight 81(1.; heavy-weight, little demand. 6.Vd ; New Zealand lamb, light-weight Is Id to Is Ifd. mediuiii-xveiglit; Is OJd to Is 0 >d, heavy weight lid: New Zealand beef, prime ox hinds 6(1. fores 3ld to 4d. Argentine chilled beef, hinds ltlld, fores 51 d. butter. The demand is limited on the basis of recent quotations. English is in very short supply and prices are averaging fully 2s 9(1 per lb. Quotations are: Danish ( very slow of sale). 226 s to 204 s per cwt: New Zealand, first and second grade. 261 sto 266 s per owl; Australian. salted, first grade 247 s to 249 s per cwt.. first and second grade together 213 s to 217 s per cwt.. nnsnlied 248 s to 252 s per exxt: Australian, free, 242 s to 215 s per exit. : Argentine salted and ,>nsaltcd. 215 s t" 233 s per cwt ; Argentine. free. 218 s to 230 s per cwt. Government ex store price- are: New Zealand 262-: Australian 242 sto •’I7-- Argentine. 225 s per exit. CHEESE. The market remains quiet and quotations are somewhat irregular.
