AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CARLE ASSOCIATION AUSTRALIA V. ENGLISH XI. (Received This Day at 10.15 a.m.) LONDON, August 29. The game was resumed in glorious weather, wicket excellent, good conditions and attendance large. ■ Playing an up-hill game in face of a big deficit, the Englishment gave a much better account of themselves chiefly as tbe result of brilliant play by Faulkner and Hubert Ashton who contributed 228. out of 320. McDonald again carried off thi' bowling honours. A bad start was made as McLaren succumbed to ATeDonald’s first ball and Foster drove one back to tho same bowler making the score 3 for 33. Gilbert and Hubert Ashton then became associated. Both began briskly, Gilbert getting some fine crisp square leg hits off McDonald. The naif century took forty-six minutes to appear, and shortly after Gilbert got bis leg in front to Armstrong who, bad displaced Gregory. 4—60. With Faulkner in, the scoring slowed down. Ryder relieved McDonald at sixty-eight and Mai ley came on for Armstrong at eightv-six. Faulkner then opened out and several times sent M niley to the boundary, the century coming up in eighty minutes. A remarkable feature of the tour has been how often straight drives off the Australian bowling hit tho opposite wicket. This happened three times within an hour to-day. The batting was now spirited and despite sale and attractive fielding and further bowling changes made, fifty were hit in forty minutes. Malley and McDonald bowled after luncheon. Tho latte,- was at his fastest and kept down the runs. At 155 Gregory relieved McDonald. The pnrtnerhip produced a century in ninetythree minutes. The batting was again of the liveliest, with brilliant driving ami glancing. Armstrong took the ball from Gregory at 192 and tbe change was. fatal to Hubert Ashton who shared bis brother’s fate. He bad been in 150 minutes. 5 for 214. Faulkner was seventy-three when he lost Ashton. As lie approached the century lie was inclined to be rash, lint he batted safely again after tho tea adjournment and completed his venture in 160 minutes. Meantime (’lmpman and Claude Ashton were disposed of. but with Falcon in. thirty-six were added in twenty minutes, including a rix- I>v Faulkner off Afailey. Tho partnersliip produced fifty before McDonald dissolved if. 8. for 307. Armstrong rang on various changes, hilt Faulkner engineered to get most of tbe Imwling. and 1 ringed bis hardest.. •He finally drove a lief one back which bit Armstrong. Tl.' reached 150 in 210 minutes and ended by bitting Armstrong into Afailey's band at deep square leg. 9 for 3rt> It was a chain eless beautiful innings, lie hit a sixer and twenty fours.
