OBITUARY
Tbe death took place last night if Mr Walter Glass second sen of the late Air and Airs 0. R. Glass of Rokatalti Tito deceased was a native of Hokitika and 46 years of age. At the time of the South African war he went to South Africa with a shipment of horses and there joined Brcbncr s Light Horse, serving for 17 months. Smrerin- from fever be returned to New Zealand when he. joined up with the Ninth Reinforcements, but shortly after peace was declared. Tn the late war ho served with the Ninth Tunnelling Corps in France. Since his ieturn lie has not been in good health and for the last twelve months-has been suffering considerably. He leaves a brother (Mr Charles P. Glass of Hart Han) and three sisters (Airs Mathers of Auck hi,id. Airs Rergmann of Addington, and Afiss Alexina Glass of OamaPu). Ihe funeral takes place on Wednesday and it will be it military one. “Matty” was n popular figure in the district am many friends will hoar the sad news with sincere regret. The death took place at Ross yesterday of an esteem eel resident. Airs ()’- Callaghan, wife of Air !’. O C»!!;". r ’"' of Ross, after an illness extending over a period of twelve months. Deceased was born at Abtngton, Altirroe, County limerick. Ireland and was "6 years of a ire. and had been 46 years '» New Zealand. She leaves a husband and family of two sons (Thomas, the well-known runner and footballer of Greymonth and John in the Post Office. Invercargill) and two daughters (Airs J. D. McKay and Afiss Annie, both of Ross). The funeral takes place cm Wednesday. The death of Mr Fred Smith of Salo Street which took place this morning after a long illness, removes a very old resident of the town. The deceased was -a- native of Southampton. England and 78 years of age. He had been m New Zealand for 56 years most of that period being spent in Hokitika where he had followed mining and shipwright pursuits. Of late he had been ailing and the end come quietly this morning. His wife predeceased him about two years ago. fie leaves a family of five, one soil (Air Walter Smith), and four daughters (-Mrs At • Alpine, Auckland, Mrs Kasseler, Napier,. Misses Ethel of Auckland, and Maud, of Hokitika). Many friends will hear with regret of the passing of another sterling pioneer.
