SERIOUS REBELLION.

LONDON, August 26. 1 The Australian Press Association learns of the serious nature of the Moplalt rebellion and the possibilities of its spread to other areas is fully realised atWhitehall. LordMontagu lias now decided to take action against certain ot the most prominent agitators who have been hitherto abusing the license accorded them. General Withall is confident regarding the effectiveness of the military measures taken against the Moplahs, but it is pointed out that the large casualties amongst the rebels are to be apprehended owing to the size of the marauding hands and the fanatical character of the Moplahs*who invariably prefer death to surrender. It is anticipated that preventative action against tho agitators is likely to produce further explosions, but the authorities are fully prepared for this eventuality. REBELLION STILL SPREADING. DELHI, Aug. 27. The area of the Moplali rebellion is i tic renting. The British troops are being concentrated at Calient barracks. Reinforcements of cavalry and infantry arc steadily arriving from Bangalore. Kama, where a number of Europeans were isolated, haa been relieved. A detachment is proceeding to the relief of Malapurum, where the rebels are in force. The railway theme is being repaired. Troops are concentrating . in that district. The Government has published ;< new martial law ordinance, strengthening the powers of the senior military officers, and the jurisdiction of the »ulitary courts. It is reported that the rebels murdered another officer of the Leinster Regiment. The -houses of Hindus generally nije being plundered, and the inmates murdered. T o rebels have secured more arms during raids on the police stations. MILITARY MEASURES. DELHI, Aug. 26. Advices from Madrid report that a Government communique of the 26th | inst. states that the road and railway repair in Calicut district proceed most satisfactorily. A relief column is advancing to Malapuram. The concentration of the necessary troops is completed and the area lias been occupied by military. The Asiatic steamer Nawab is expected to arrive at Calicut from Bombay on the 28th with ample supplies. The district Magistrate at Calicut reports that Dacoites have entered the district.
