AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION AGAINST SOMERSET. * (Received This Day at 10,15 a.m.) LONDON, August 24 The Australians are playing Somerset at Tauton. They won the toss and tho the close of the day made 331 in the first innings. Somerset team consists of—Daniel, Macßrya.ii, Johnson. Pippon. Conridine, Lowry, Wharton. Robson, White, Bridges, Lyon. The weather was fine, wicket excellent and attendance six thousand. The Australian innings was rather one sided as Collins was responsible for 101 and Ryder 124. Bridge took the howling honors securing five wickets. A feature of the innings was that there was not a single sundry recorded. The fielding throughout was of high quality. Collins and Moyne opened to Bridges and Robson, the latter a veteran, of fifty one. Ma.vne at thirteen was Bridges first victim, beaten by an offbreak which bowled him off his pads. .Macartney started with his usual freedom driving three successive halls of Bridges to the boundary but before lie got set lie was dismissed by a trimmer from White who displaced Robson a I sixty two. Bardsloy was uncomfortable and saw Collins nearly caught at the wicket hy Lyon , off Bridges, a fate which befell himself next over. 3 for 76. Collins and Ryder were then associated for two hours and put on 151. Numerous bowling changes 'were ‘tried bowlers being tired before a separation was effected. Collins was dismissed by a full toss on to his loot. He hatted three hours and hit twelve fours. This was one of his lucky innings for lie gave three chances. The next two wickets added nothing, hut when Arm strong joined Ryder, there was some vigorous scoring. Ryder obtained his century in P" minutes, just before three hundred appeared. After Lowry howled Armstrong although McDonald smote Robson for six. the innings was quickly ended. Ryder being not out His innings was without chance.
