MR HUGHES IN FRANCE. (Received This Day at 9.40 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 24. Mr Hughes on his tour through the battlefield found conditions vastly different to his previous visit, when guns were roaring and signs of destruction of men and material were everywhere. The countryside is now peaceful though battle scarred. Labour gangs - are busy reconstructing villages, though it will be many years before the nuns are completely effaced. Several acres were purchased on a bill overlooking Bretonneux field with a view of erecting a monument costing £IOO,OOO. • Recent reports, however, were against the site which is unfrequented and invisible from the main road. Mr Hughes determined to see e " himself and inspected every viewpoint. He dislikes departing from the settled plan, but the weight of opinion is against the site. Coming from a distant country on a pilgrimage to the graves they would view the monuments through tears of gratitude. This significant emblem symbolised Australia’s homage to the magnificent soldiers who were among the foremost, bravest and most devoted in the titanic struggle against oppressors. Many ot them sleep heie in the soil of France, gratefully and generously consecrated in perpetuity to their memory hy the trench nation. He concludes that he has long recognised the imminence of a compromise, and intimated to Krassin and other Bolshevik agents the necessity for entering into confidential relations to ■%Aliat end, with Russian Socialist cmiV**-
