LORD NORTHCLIFFE

INTEREST IN EMIGRATION. VANCOUVER, August. 4. Asked if he had any special message for Australians on the eve of his sailing, Lord ..orthcliff e said: “I am going to Australia and New- Zealand for the first time in my lif°, partly for the purpose, of enquiring into emigration but really for a holiday. ‘■l will have a week’s holiday in New Zealand, and I wish to spend most of it fishing. I regret that my Australian holiday will he only of three, weeks. It will be impossible- for me to accept the public hospitality offered. I have a number of private friends with whom I want to stay. I wish, a s far as possible, to get close to the people of Australia and New Zealand, so that I may understand their thoughts in regard to many burning questions affecting them and the Mother Country.” ■ Reverting to Empire settlement, Lor | Northeliffe said: ‘T am under the impression that there is more activity in connexion with emigration from England to Australia and New Zealand than to Canada, Rhodesia is attracting many farmers with capital. The scientific development of immigration is one of the most, pressing needs of the moment. The war has been a tremendous shake-up in every country; Capital has moved in unexpected ways. “The phrase that England is changing hands is no misnomer. Take British East Africa, for example. To the Canadian mind I find it suggests elephants. tigers and snakes; but, as a matter of fact it contains some of the finest farming country in the world. Many skilful agriculturists have gone there since the war. ‘T think that indiscriminate emigration is a mistake, for I have seen men come out with entirely wrong ideas and were much disappointed because of the misinformation. “I expect a British election no year. 1 believe the result will he aa overwhelming victory for anti-waste candidates.”
