SPRINGBOKS DEFEAT AUCKLAND. [ilY TELEGRAPn—PER PRESS ASSOCIATION] I AUCKLAND, Aug. 20. The match between the South Africans and Auckland was played at Eden Park this afternoon liefore about 25,000 spectators. The weather was ideal and the ground fast and dry. Numerous curtain raisers were played. Two 40-minute spells were played at the South South Africans’ request. Mr C. Fraser (Manawatu) refereed the game. The South African team was the same as telegraphed yesterday, except that Mellish replaced Piennar. The Auckland team was unaltered. Auckland team kicked off with the sun in their faces, and the South Africans attacked until a line forward rush took play to the visitors’ twenty-five. Clever linekicking by the Greens (Africa) relieved, and play travelled up and down the field, both sides showing great pace, the South Africans being compelled to force down. As a result of a determined Green attack, Auckland forced down. Then Clarkson made an opening for Zeller, who scored a fine try, which G. Morkel converted. Fast play followed, which was mostly in the Africans’ favour. Strauss marked in a good position, * hut Auckland smothered the kick at goal. The Africans had all the best of the play for the remainder of the spell, and half-time sounded with the score unchanged— South Africans 5, Auckland 0. Immediately after resuming, Zeller nearly scored on the blind side. Then a fine passing rush saw Auckland attacking, hut the Africans came again and Zeller, picking up smartly, scored. Although the scores were a fair indication of the team’s relative merits, the game was not lacking in interest.

BULLER BEAT TNANGAHUA. WESTPORT, Aug. 20 The return match Buller v. Inangahua was played at Westport to-day on a heavy ground, and was won by Buller by 37 points to 3. A feature of the game was the fine passing bouts by the Buller backs and the strenuous forward play. Tries were scored for Buller by Grogan (2), Sven son (2), Mumm, Whittaker, Griffiths, O’Neill and Borlase. Casey converted three and Scliadick two tries". Bob Powley scored for Inangahua. CANTERBURY BEAT SOUTH CANTERBURY. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 20 Canterbury defeated South Canterbury by 14 points to 8. Ford scored two tries for Canterbury andDalley and Ellis one each, one being converted. R. Stewart scored a try for South Canterbury, which was converted, and Scott kicked a penalty goal. RANFURLY SHIELD. INVERCARGILL, Aug. 20. Before an attendance of 7000 people on a holding ground, Southland defeated Otago for the Ranfurly Shield by ten points (two converted tries) to eight (a converted try and a penalty). Southland hacks were superior and the forwards showed to advantage in loose play, hut the Otago pack had the upper hand in the tight work, scrums and line outs. Otago narrowly missed a try in the see olid spell, hut the Otago half was collared at the posts. Just before time a loose forward rush from the centre saw Diack dash across but lie was called hack for a knock-on hv O’Kane. The holders were the better team on the day. A DENIAL.
