i'llk agitation now being aroused at Nelson for the extension of railway communication from the Nelson province to the West Coast is not an unreasonable line of action. Under the broad lines of the original East amt West Coiast railway scheme. Nelson was included ns a main connection. Indeed a great deal of credit l'oi* initiating tlio first proposal is due Nelson and that province joined with Canterbury in assisting to send'delegates to England when uie lirst negotiations were opened up for* an English Company to finance or otherwise undertake the great scheme. Nominally, the whole proposal was known as the East and West Coast and Nelson railway and the Nelson Section has in part Ikhmi made. But of late years owing to the adverse fortunes of the great undertaking, trie Nelson connection has dropped out oi the popular imagination. Time was of course when this’ Coast was linked commercially with Nelson, and when regular shipping between Nelson and tin* Coast was in vogue there was a continuous stream of business intercourse. Much of the produce consumed here came from the Nelson province and the relations appeared to be always very mutual. Since shipping lias been curtailed, the community of interest has lieen lacking and the need and desire facloser connection has dispapeured. 11 is wise to revive th,» subject now. The East and West Coast railway will scon I>o consummated. Thereafter it is mule) turn attention to the Nelson connection. The link between Inungahun •)unction and Westport will no doubt be hurried on, and then there i be the obvious necessity to link tV Bidler lin P with the Nelson service now making its way towards Murchison. D is the obvious consummation to the complete railway scheme, and the Nelson folk are wise to stir up the matter for practical consideration at this stage.
