A regulation gazetted regarding the examination of engineers for the mereatile marine provides that certificates .of competency will he granted te British subjects who pass the requisite examinations and comply with the requisite conditions. Examiners are appointed. Arrangements luive been made for holding examinations at the following places during the first three working davs in the months named in each case, Except Auckland; at Aue island, during the first three working days after the 14th day in the months of January, March, May, July, September and November; at Hamilton, July, September and November; at Napier, February, .Tune, and October; At Wanganui February, June, and October; At Palmerston North, February, June and Oetofier; at Wellington, February, April, .Tune, August October and December; at Nelson, February, June, and October; at Greymouth, in February,, June and October; at Christchurch, in January, March, May, July, September and November; at Tim am, in March, July, September, and November; in Dunedin, February, April, June, August, October and December; at Invercargill, in April, August and December; at Gisborne in February, May, August and Nobjemljer. In ease s of emergency the examiners will exercise discretion as to th G examination of candidates at other than the prescribed periods. DECREASE IN N.Z. SHEEP. WELLINGTON, August 18. Statistics published in the Gazette show that the total number of sheep in the Dominion in April was 23,286,031 This is a net decrease of 6344,939 on last year. METHODIST CHI’SC AUCKLAND, August 2. Official information states the British Wesleyan Conference has appointed as representative to New Zealand Methodist Centenary celebrations, Rev. Dr. J. T. Wardl, Stafford, who retired from the Presidency of the British Conference last month. The Methodist Episcopal Church of United States has appointed Bishop C. E. Locke, at present statationed at Manilla in charge of Methodist activities in the Philippines. HOCKEY. GISBORNE, August 11. At hockey, Auckland beat Poverty Bay, after a very even game, by three goals (scored by Somers, Frater and Watts) to one (scored by Armstrong).
