He would emerge stronger than ever politically, and Sinn Fein would be more isolated and more helpless. It is to he hoped De Valera’s more sngacitous’ advisers will impress this fact upon him in these criitical days,.

(Received This Day at 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 18 Commenting on De Valera’s speech on Wednesday, the “Irish Times” says:— “We take into account the human nature of Sinn Feiners as in Irish Unionists. We do not question Dail Eireann patriotism, or a readiness to make sacrifices, and hope its patriotism limy be infused with wisdom, not requiring tlie Irish people to make immense sacrifices to no useful end. De Valera’s speech suggests a deadlock has been reached. If so, the time lids arrived to refer the Government’s offer to the Irish people, who are entitled to he consulted in an extremity concerning the life and peace of every man, woman and child. The “Irish Independent” rejoices that De Valera’s statement reveals no suggestion that the negotiations are lilv.'lv to he terminated.
