AN OPEN LETTER.
TO THE WEST I-AND CO ENT V COUNCIL. Mr. Chairman ami Members—l am a carrier and motor service contractor. 1 and I am of opinion vour Council is out of order and doing wrong in nllow- ■ iug broken metaj to be placed on the road luotween lvanieri townshipland Koiterangi which is being done, against the wish of the ratepayers, at the present time, as it is against the welfare of the district. I am of the opinion that a motor road like the Lower-Kokatahi - Hokitika road should be made of fine metal to get a smooth surface, which is necessary for the motor traffic. I also notice you are allowing the roadmen to gather up the loose stones from the beach and place them on the road. This I am quite sure is a waste ol money, because our motors will not leave a loose stone on the road if they are not properly covered with fine metal a,s the motors when travelling throw aside the loose stones, which travel sometimes a chain into the paddocks. This can he easily proved on any journey. 1 may state T am on the road day and night at all hours and I know something alsmt its present disgraceful condition. I also have noticed that the Council have not kept their promise to give much-needed attention to the approaches to some of the bridges on tbe road to Koiterangi. which are iri a most disgraceful condition, all foi the need of a few loads of gravel. 1 took a car to Koiterangi on Sunday and had hardly started my journey when I was pulled up at the second bridge from Longford Hotel bv a crash atul hiokett I Kilts, from the jar off a H inch drop off the bridge approach. Now Gentle- i men who is going to pay this damage 9 j I hone to see something done la this direction, or steps will be taken to ' recover damages iii the hear future.T am etc. | R, MACK LEY, j 1/ower Kokatahi. August 17th 1021. I
