BALL AT RUATAPU.

The plain and fancy dress ball at Ruatapu to celebrate the opening of Albert Hall last evening proved a mos't enjoyable and successful ona. There were about 130 couples .present. The floor was in splendid order and was much admired, and the hall itself was well decorated. Lawn’s Orchestra supplied capital music played in their usual style. The M’sC. were Messrs Jack Lock and T. Jones, and they kept the floor well occupied. The prizes for best costumes (fancy dress) were won by Miss Spoor as a Butterfly, and Air G. Oates a?' Red Indian Chief “Hatchetface.” Other good costumes included “Red Cross Nurse”, “Spiders’s Web”, “Kirkpatricks Jam”, “Witch”, “Tarred and Feathered”. “Captain Kidd”, “Garibaldi” “Queen Anne”. “Weldons Journal”. “Belle of New York”, “Giesha Girl”, etc. The supper arrangements were very complete and reflected great, credit on the Ladies Committee. During the interval, Mr W. Butler explained the co-operative system on which the hall had been bnilt. and said great credit was due to the workers as a whole for the manner in which the work had been carried out. Mr T. R . R. Looney (Chairman of Committee! briefly replied. A large number of visitors from Greymouth, Hokitika, Knniori„ Kokntrthi, Ross. Hari-Hnri and South Westland wore present'. Dancing was indulged in until mi early hour on Thursday morning and all voted the gathering a huge success. To-night, a juvenile fancy dress lull] will he hold.
