WESTLAND PROGRESS LEAGUE.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 16th | The Executive of the Westland Branch of the Canterbury progress League mot at the County Chambers at 7.30 o’clock. Present—Messrs W. Jeffries (President), W. J. Butler, R. Wild, J. J. Breeze, A. G. Pilkington, j. Ritchie, T. Carley, D. J. Evans, ,T. Morris (lion, see.), and Dr Teiehelmann. Th o minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed. The outward correspondence was approved. TRW A R-D CORRESPONDENCE. From S Richardson, Matninui, suggesting that the Government he asked to send a dairy instructor through the southern district, and give public lectures in the different settlements. - Received and resolved that the Agricultural Department be asked to send a special officer to the Coast for the put - pose suggested. Erom Director Agricultural Department stating the question of sending a dairy instructor and biologist to the Coast was now under consideration.— Received From Bushbv Cowing, Arthur’s Pass expressing bis willingness to give an illustrated lecture on the “Story of the Otira Tunnel,” subject to authority from the Department.-Received wit I thanks. From Resident Engineer, Oreymoutli. giving departmental approval to AD Cowing to fix a suitable (late. September 14th. was suggested as the provisional date, and it wa s resolved to apply for the use of the Town Hall. From W. H. Chinn forwarding paper on flax industry- -Received; already published. From Canterbury Progress League thanking the Branch for support to the Canterbury site for the School of Forestry, and also for the general support give by the Branch to the work of the League.- Received. From Sir F. D. Bell, acknowledging letter in support of the School of Forestry site at Christchurch, —Received: Mr Evans reported in respect to tie large deputation which waited on the Minister. From Resident Engineer. Greymoutb. explaining the delay in connection with the erection of the Tataro river bridge. South Westland. Received; and matter referred to the President to look into when in South Westland next week. From C. M. Mnlfrny. resigning his seat as representative for the Branch on the Canterbury Progress League. Received and a cordial vote of thanks passed for services rendered. Tt was resolved to ask Air F. Board, Christchurch to act as the representative of the Branch on the League. From Canterbury Lucerne Growing Committee pointing out the decrease in stock, and urging a campaign te grow more feed for stock. Receive: 1 and referred to the Westland A and p. Association for consideration. Mr Butler suggested a lucerne growing competition might be tried on the Const The President said there seemed to |,c some prejudice against attempting 1n grow lucerne on the Coast. Air Butler thought such places at. tlm ATont O’Or tailings might prove suitably conditioned for growing lucerne. Some small experiment was being made in that locality and promised success. Tt was decided to ask the Canterbury Committee to include Westland ill the scope of the competition. general. Th o Secretary reported regarding the finances. Tt was resolved to make application to the local bodies and dairy companies for their annual contributions. AD' i’ilkington and Dr. Teicheltnami were elected auxiliary members of the Executive. The President stated Mr Dalgliesh of the Agricultural Department had offered to give a paper mi “Grassesuitable for the Coast.” Received with thanks and resolved to fix the readme of the paper for the next, ordinary meeting.

Dr Toichelmnn promised to prepare an illustrated lecture on the tourist route from Otirn to Waiho (.urge, L lie given at a later date The lecture would he given also in Christchurch al a convenient date.-- Heartily approved. Mr AY. .T. Butler, in reply to a question stated he would prepare a paper for the next ordinary meeting of the Branch. The President mentioned the projected tour of the Canterbury Progress League to the Coast, Nelson and Alar’ borough and suggested some representatives of the local Branch should accompany the League members. 11 was resolved to leave tli,> matter in the hands of the President to arrange when further particulars were available. ATr Jeffries stated ho would lie visiting South AVestland with the County party next week and would he pleased to attend to any matters in the district which called for attention. 11 was suggested that the President p port on any matters calling for action. Mr "Ritchie asked that while south the party look into a road drainage matter adjacent to Ritchie Brothers’ property at Jacobs River with a view to reporting to the Public AVbrks Department which controlled that portion of the main south road. Mr Butler moved a motion in regard to the timber trade, and the motion and discussion are reported in another column of this issue Mr Breeze asked the support of the Branch to the agitation to secure an improved subsidy rate for contribution towards the hospital maintenance from local bodies. This was heartily supported and it was resolved to forward the resolution to the Government through the parent League in Christchurch. The meeting rose at 9.15 o’clock.
